Chandigarh City - City Beautiful

Designed by the French architect Le Corbusier in 1953, Chandigarh is a beautiful city that acts as a capital to both Punjab as well as Haryana state. Chandigarh derives its name from the Goddess of power- Sri Chandika and represents modern and progressive India. With it’s neatly laid out residential blocks, grid planned roads and numerous big gardens Chandigarh, one of most well designed cities has become a rare epitome of modernization co-existing with nature’s preservation.

With numerous picturesque spots, Chandigarh is a hot tourist destination of India. For instance people from all corners of the world visit Chandigarh to take a look at the unique Nek Chand Fantasy Rock Garden that’s based on the designed by the former road inspector, Nek Chand who without any formal training created an oasis filled with art objects. The Rock Garden is a major tourist attraction and the artwork done here is made from recycled materials such as broken pottery, pebbles, boulders, coal and broken glass. All these items have been used to create a world of palaces, soldiers, monkeys, village life, women and temples in the Nek Chand Fantasy Rock Garden. The garden also boasts of beautiful waterfalls, pools and an open air theater.

When it comes to excursions around Chandigarh, Pinjore gardens deserve a special mention. Also known as Yadavindra Gardens, they are situated about 20 kms away from the city. The work of creating Pinjore gardens began in the seventeenth century. It covers a total area of 100 acres. Chandigarh Pinjore Garden serves as the venue for hosting the annual event of mango festival. The garden houses a mini zoo, historic places, Japanese garden, nursery and a number of picnic spots. According to the Hindu mythology, it is said that it is over here that Pandava brothers had rested during their exile.

Sukhna Lake is a beautiful lake that lies in the foothills of Shivalik range. The unique thing about Sukhna is that it is a manmade lake. It is a 3 km long lake that was created in the year 1958. It was done by damming the Sukhna Choe, which is a seasonal stream flowing down from the Shivalik hills. Sukhana Lake of Chandigarh, India has become an integral part of the city.

People visit this place in the morning to enjoy the cool breeze and the beauty of nature. Chandigarh Sukhna Lake serves as a great picnic spot and an apt place for pursuing water sport activities like boating, yachting and water skiing etc. The atmosphere over here is very serene and thus apt for meditating.
